In this hotel blog, we will introduce you to some of the most beautiful historic towns in the Harz Mountains that you can visit and experience. Read on and let yourself be enchanted by the beauty and charm of the medieval towns in the Harz on a round trip!

1. Goslar

Goslar is a city with a lot of German history. The city is located in Lower Saxony on the northeastern edge of the Harz Mountains. It was founded in 922 as a merchant settlement. Traces from that time can still be seen today. There is something to discover on every corner. The center of the old town is the market place. Around 1500 half-timbered houses can be admired in the old town. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a wonderful way to experience history in a different way. The old town hall is also located in the old town. The landmark of Goslar is the market fountain. A golden eagle decorates the fountain in a very special way. The lower bowl of the fountain probably dates back to the 12th century. The upper bowl, which originally belonged to an independent fountain, dates from between 1200 and 1230. The Schuhhof is the oldest square in Goslar. Various modern buildings are surrounded by half-timbered houses. Goslar is an imperial city. Therefore, the Imperial Palace is one of the highlights in Goslar. There is much to discover here.

2. Quedlinburg

In Quedlinburg every house tells its story. Here you can dive into the past at every turn. Quedlinburg is located in Saxony-Anhalt and was founded over 1000 years ago. In 922, the city was first mentioned in a document. With over 1300 well-preserved half-timbered houses, Quedlinburg is one of the most popular and exceptional medieval towns in Europe. As early as the 10th century, the striking castle hill was built, where German kings and emperors resided over time. To the left of the castle stands the cathedral, built in typical Romanesque style. From the castle hill you have a magnificent view over the city. The old town, which can be seen from here, is one of the largest in Germany. The market square is the center of the city. The town hall dates back to the 14th century.

3. Stolberg

Stolberg is rightly considered one of the most beautiful villages in Germany. The town is located in Saxony-Anhalt and can also look back on a long history. The old half-timbered houses enchant every visitor. In 1357 Stolberg was founded in a document. However, many suspect that the place is much older. In the alleys, many small houses of day laborers alternate with larger, taller buildings of merchants. There is not a single staircase in the historic town hall. This particular building has outside stairs. These must be used if one wants to reach another floor. The alleys are sometimes so narrow that larger vehicles must drive carefully.

4. Wernigerode

Not for nothing Wernigerode is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. The center of the city is the historic market square. Here is also the “Leaning House”, where the sense of balance can be tested. The pedestrian zone with its many historic buildings invites you to dream. Numerous half-timbered houses can be admired here. Wernigerode Castle stands on the remains of a 12th century castle. The castle can be reached comfortably with the Bimmelbahn. Inside the castle, various rooms can be visited. They show the life of the high nobility. The movie “The Little Ghost” was filmed in Wernigerode Castle.

5. Halberstadt

Halberstadt is also worth a visit during a visit to the Harz Mountains. The city, which is over 1200 years old, takes the visitor back to times gone by. Numerous church buildings and residential caves are the highlights of the city. Art lovers will also get their money’s worth here. Halberstadt is especially famous for its medieval cathedral. The city was founded in 804 and is located in Saxony-Anhalt.

Conclusion

Each of these cities holds many secrets just waiting to be discovered. Those who visit them are automatically transported to another time and can experience the rich history and culture of this region firsthand. From impressive architecture to charming alleys and squares, there is much to discover and experience in each historic Harz town.

Whether you’re looking for a lively town full of restaurants and bars or a quieter town with historic charm, the Harz Mountains offer something for everyone.
